KOHIMA, SEP 11: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has issued a strong statement opposing the ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra,’ a nationwide event planned for September 28, 2024, in Kohima. The Yatra aims to advocate for a nationwide ban on cow slaughter, a move the NSF argues directly challenges the cultural and constitutional rights of the Naga people.

In a press release, the NSF voiced their objection, asserting that the event threatens to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of various communities within Nagaland. The Federation emphasized that the proposed Yatra undermines the unique constitutional protections afforded to the Naga people under Article 371A, which shields their customs, culture, and religious practices from external interference.

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and the Government of Nagaland had previously made it clear that the “Ban on Cow Slaughter Act 2019” would not be enforced in the state due to these special provisions. The NSF contends that the ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra’ disrespects these decisions and the rights guaranteed to the Naga people, making any imposition of such laws unacceptable.

“The proposed event disregards the will of the people and their elected representatives,” stated the NSF in their release. “The Naga people have their own distinct cultural and religious practices, including dietary customs that differ from other regions. While we respect the social and religious beliefs of every individual and community, we expect the same respect for our customs and practices.”

The Federation expressed concerns that allowing the Yatra to proceed could inflame communal tensions and undermine the longstanding harmony in the state. They also highlighted that Article 371A grants the Naga people the authority to make decisions on religious, cultural, and land ownership matters, including cow slaughter.

The NSF vowed to prevent the event from taking place in Nagaland if it proceeds, warning that they will take all necessary measures to uphold their rights and cultural identity. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Naga people’s rights, culture, and identity against any external attempts to infringe upon them.
