Observance of National Disaster Reduction Day

Published on

The East Khasi Hills District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Thursday observed the ‘National Disaster Reduction Day’.

With an aim to create awareness in disaster management to the public, the program was observed with the objective to encourage participation of every citizen in building more disaster-resilient communities and to encourage a culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.

The event celebrates how people and communities in the nation are reducing their exposure to disasters and raises awareness about the importance of coordinated efforts by all concerned not just during disaster time but throughout the year – to educate, equip and train various stakeholders in disaster preparation and mitigation.

Numerous programs were initiated for the general public, like the awareness programme on disaster management and COVID-19 precautionary measures for the general public and taxi drivers at market areas under Shillong city. Masks were also distributed at old age homes and market vendors.

Awareness on various disasters preparedness will be broadcasted through FM radio throughout the month. Literature and videos on the Do’s and Dont’s during a landslide have also been prepared for circulating and sharing with the public.
