Police and Central Security Forces Uncover War-Like Arsenal in Manipur’s Kakching District

Imphal: Police on Monday found a war-like store of arms and ammunition during a joint search operation with central security forces in the Kakching district of Manipur.

The recovered items include six single bomb marks as W/P, five tube launching pipes, nine different type empty magazines of INSAS LMG, eight walkie-talkie chargers, eight .303 rifle empty cases, five live rounds of .303 rifles, one breech block, one .303 rifle bolt, seven detonators, six camouflage dress, 18 khaki shirt along with 13 long pants, three green dangri shirt along with one long pants, one .303 LMG barrel, three BP vest black in colour and 10 magazine pouches.

The items were recovered during an operation at Wairi Panjao Panlum area on the outskirts of Kakching district today morning by a combined team of district police and BSF, the police said. 

The recovered items were handed over to Kakching police station where a case was registered.

The police along with the state and the central security forces have been conducting combing operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas across the violent affected districts of the state to recover illegal weapons in the possession of the miscreants and those weapons, ammunition and explosives looted from the armouries of the police and security forces during the initial stage of the outbreak of violence on May 3 last.

A total of 5,669 different types of sophisticated arms and around 500,000 rounds of ammunition were looted from police stations and armouries by mobs and individuals.

Maximum numbers of arms and ammunition were looted in Imphal West, Imphal East and Churachandpur districts, according to the police report. 

The ethnic violence was triggered on May 3 and has since left at least 180 people dead and 50,000 displaced.
