Imphal: Police on Monday lathi-charged a group of students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) to quell their bid to lock down the administrative block of the varsity.
The police resorted to baton-charge after the agitating students went out of control and attempted to lock down the administrative block forcibly.
Trouble began around noon when a large number of post graduate students of colleges affiliated to the DMU marched toward the administrative block demanding to resolve the classification of PG and UG teachers at the earliest and save the academic careers of the students.
The students displayed placards that read as “Resolve the teacher classification issue”, “Allow students to study”, “DMU authority, maintain academic calendar properly”, “Save the careers of the students,” etc.

They also shouted various slogans demanding resignation of the “unworthy” vice chancellor on reaching the administrative block.
Alleging that the DMU authority remained silent over their earlier demand of timely commencement of the academic session, the students tried to lock down the administrative block with a padlock.
The police personnel on duty there tried to prevent the agitating students from locking down the administrative block and asked them to disperse.
This drew an angry response from the students, who allegedly tried to lock down the administrative block forcibly.
In their bid to stop the students from locking down the administrative block, the police caned the students.

However, no person was injured in the act, a police source said.
Meanwhile, vice-president of DMU Post Graduate Students’ Union, N Rikesh while talking to reporters said that they protested against the delay in resolving the teacher classification issue in the university.
He alleged that there is lack of clarity in the classification of teachers for teaching post-graduate (PG) and undergraduate (UG) classes in the colleges affiliated to the university.
This issue has delayed the commencement of the academic session for the current year and the students are on the verge of losing their academic careers, he said.

Rikesh then threatened that if the authority failed to address their demands at the earliest, they would launch intense forms of agitations.
The Dhanamanjuri University was established under The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 that came into force on April 6, 2018. It has five constituent colleges – DM College of Arts, DM College of Science, DM College of Commerce, GP Women’s College and LMS Law College.
