Rajasthan Man Held for Impersonating IPS Officer

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police have arrested a man from Rajasthan for allegedly impersonating an IPS officer on social media to defraud a victim, officials said today.

According to a statement issued by police, the accused created a fake social media profile of DIG Vivekanand Singh Rathore and “fraudulently contacted the victim”.

The victim then transferred money and was subsequently defrauded, the statement said.

A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station vide Case No. 28(05)2026 under Sections 318(4)/319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita read with Sections 66C/66D of the Information Technology Act.

“In a significant breakthrough, one accused person, namely Jahul Ali, a resident of Kakrali Meo, Alwar, Rajasthan, was arrested on May 23, 2026, from Jaipur,” the police also said.

The arrest was made following sustained investigation and technical surveillance with internal sources. “Further investigation into the case is in progress,” the police stated.
