Walking Rally in Agartala Celebrates 75 Glorious Years of National Sample Survey

Agartala: With banners in hand and a message to spread, officials of the National Statistics Office (NSO) walked through the capital city of Tripura, Agartala, on Tuesday to commemorate 75 years of the National Sample Survey (NSS). The rally aimed to educate the public on how NSS data has shaped government policies and strengthened welfare programs over the decades.

Organized by the NSO (Field Operations Division), Regional Office, Agartala, the rally started from Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan and proceeded towards Netaji Subhash Vidyaniketan School Ground, Netaji Chowmuhani. Officials and staff members carried placards highlighting NSS’s contributions to socio-economic development and policy formulation. Pamphlets were also distributed along the route to create awareness about the significance of statistical data in governance.

Deputy Director General, NSO (FOD), R.O, Agartala, Anil D. Patil, addressed the gathering and said, “For the past 75 years, the NSS has been instrumental in collecting vital data on employment, consumer expenditure, health, education, and various socio-economic indicators. The data has significantly contributed to shaping policies that drive inclusive growth and sustainable development.”

He further stated, “Large-scale sample surveys conducted by NSO provide essential data on various socio-economic issues. The primary function of NSO is to collect and analyze data on socio-economic indicators and demographic parameters, forming the foundation for evidence-based policymaking.”

The NSS conducts surveys on topics such as household consumption expenditure, employment and unemployment ratio, poverty, health, and education, along with annual industry surveys. The rally served as a platform to highlight the importance of accurate data collection in economic planning and governance.

Guided by the principle of “Data for Development,” NSO continues to generate reliable data that empowers policymakers and strengthens public welfare programs. The event successfully engaged citizens, fostering greater awareness of the NSS’s role in national progress.
