RIMS Recognised as Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases; First in NE India

Ukhrul, Jan 21: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, Manipur, has been officially recognized as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases. This makes RIMS the first such centre in Northeast India and the 13th in the country. As a CoE, RIMS will serve as a premier government tertiary hospital, offering specialized facilities for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of rare diseases.

Patients seeking treatment for rare diseases can now approach RIMS for medical care, with financial support of up to Rs. 50 lakhs per patient available under the National Policy for Rare Diseases. The policy covers 63 rare diseases that are approved for treatment at these Centres of Excellence.

RIMS’ selection follows four rigorous inspections by a panel of experts, ensuring that the institution meets the high standards required for such a prestigious designation. This development is expected to significantly improve access to quality care for patients with rare diseases in the region.
