Ukhrul, Mar 7: Regarding the media reports on the issue surrounding the president of Rongmei Naga Peoples’ Organization (RNPO), Sangamlung Kamei, RNPO assembly speaker Meijiang Gonmei informed all concerned today that, since the required procedures were not followed, “the earlier unilateral impeachment of the president by the executive council members is declared null and void, and the president shall continue in the office”.

The RNPO speaker then said “a letter dated 20/02/2025 seeking disciplinary action/impeachment of the incumbent RNPO president Pouh Sangamlung Kamei was received on February 27, 2025.”

As per the RNPO constitution, further proceedings will be initiated by the assembly speaker of the RNPO. “In the meantime, consultations are being carried out with the advisors, seniors, state units and former office bearers and other stakeholders. Until a final decision is made on the floor of the RNPO assembly, all concerned are urged to maintain the status quo and adhere to the required decorum,” Meijiang Gonmei, speaker of RNPO assembly, said today.

Further, according to the RNPO assembly speaker, it has come to the notice of the assembly secretariat that certain executive council members had unilaterally declared the impeachment of the president through media channels, bypassing the constitutional process. “Such actions are misleading, unconstitutional and detrimental to the integrity of the organization,” he added.

As per Article 28 of the RNPO constitution, impeachment or disciplinary action requires a formal written petition of impeachment to the speaker with the detailed particulars. It also requires an opportunity to respond for the individual against whom the impeachment/disciplinary action petition is submitted. It also requires a two-thirds majority vote in the RNPO assembly, and further requires execution within three months of submission of the impeachment petition.

“Since these procedures were not followed, the earlier unilateral impeachment of the president by the executive council members is declared null and void, and the president shall continue in the office,” the RNPO assembly secretariat added.
