Imphal, Nov 12: At a time when security forces are conducting combing operations to recover arms and ammunition looted in the wake of violence, miscreants planted a hand grenade said to be looted from the police at the gate of an individual in Imphal East district on Sunday.
Police said that miscreants planted the hand grenade at the gate of the residence of Sapamcha Kangleipal who contested the last assembly elections from Lamlai constituency of Imphal East as an independent candidate at Nongada Makha Leikai under Lamlai police station.

Family members found the hand grenade wrapped with papers near the gate early morning, around 6 am.
On being informed, a team of Lamlai police rushed to the spot and took up precautionary measures before calling out personnel of the state police detection and disposal squad.
The bomb experts defused the grenade safely, the police also said.
On being examined, the hand grenade was found to be one among several explosives looted from the Manipur Police Training College (MPTC), Pangei in Imphal East district at the initial stage of the ethnic violence erupted in the state on May 3 last.
The recovery of the hand grenade was amid the combing operations being conducted by the police and security forces to recover the looted arms, ammunition and explosives from the armouries of the state police and security posts in the ongoing ethnic violence.
A total of 5,668 arms along with ammunition and a large number of explosives were looted during the initial stage of the violence.
Of this, security forces have so far recovered over 1,329 arms and 15,050 rounds of ammunition till the middle week of September. They also recovered 900 bombs.

Failure on the part of those possessing the arms and explosives to surrender despite repeated warning, police along with central security forces have been conducting combing operations to recover the looted items till today.
