Security measures tightened in Manipur valley districts in view of Republic Day

Security measures have been further enhanced across valley districts of Manipur in view of the Republic Day boycott by various rebel outfits. In this regard, police intensified the ongoing cordon and search operations apart from the random frisking and checking on roads leading to the state capital.

A good number of armed police personnel were also detailed at sensitive areas in Imphal who conduct random frisking and checking of people. The operations were conducted at various places across the valley districts of the state on Friday, too.

In one such operation in and around Palace Gate, Andro parking and Pureiromba Konangkhong on Friday, the police commandos picked up as many as 11 suspects and handed over to Porompat police station for further verification. The suspects were picked up during verifications of around 500 people. They also removed tinted films of 20 vehicles, the police said.

Police commandos attached with Imphal West district police also conducted house to house search operations at Singjamei area. The operation was conducted to verify bailouts and criminals at Singjamei Sapam Leikai and Leishangthem Leikai. During the operation, about 80 houses were searched and about 180 individuals including 10 bailouts underground cadres were verified. No one was picked up, the police added.

Reports of police commandos conducting similar cordon and search operations at selected areas were also received from Thoubal and Bishnupur districts of the state. However, there were no reports of picking up of any suspect during the operations.

Police said they will further intensify the operations.
