Volleyball Tournament in Senapati Honours Kargil Hero Sepoy K. Ashuli, VrC

Senapati, Apr 7: The 1st edition of the Late Sepoy K. Ashuli, VrC Memorial Open Volleyball Tournament, 2025, commenced at the Mini Stadium, Senapati, with the participation of 10 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams. The event is being organised by the 16 Assam Rifles in coordination with the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur (SDOAM), as part of a special initiative to honour local heroes.

Giving a brief account of Sepoy K. Ashuli, Vir Chakra, it was mentioned that he hailed from Makhan Centre village in Senapati district and joined the 1 Naga Regiment in 1992. Sepoy K. Ashuli, a soldier of the 1st Battalion, the Naga Regiment, made the supreme sacrifice on 23rd July 1999, during Operation Vijay at Kargil. He displayed unmatched bravery in the face of enemy fire. A valiant soldier, Sepoy K. Ashuli fought gallantly and laid down his life at the age of 23 in the line of duty.

He was posthumously awarded the gallantry award Vir Chakra for his outstanding courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.

Speaking on the occasion, Maj. N.M. Singh, SM, Company Commander, Senapati COB, 16 Assam Rifles, stated that the dedication of Sepoy K. Ashuli, VrC, was for the love of the country. He dedicated his life despite knowing the fact that he may or may not return once he volunteered to move ahead. In his memory, the first edition of the Late Ashuli, Vir Chakra Open Volleyball Tournament, 2025, was organised, which he hopes will continue every year. The army officer urged everyone to encourage and remember those who sacrificed selflessly for the nation.

The competition features 10 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams, with participants and teams from various districts of Manipur. The overwhelming response is a testament to the deep sense of pride, unity, and sportsmanship within the region.

This event not only promotes youth participation in sports but also serves as a platform to honour the bravery of local heroes and strengthen the bond between the armed forces and the community.

Women’s Teams:

Maram Sisters, Hoivah Memorial Team (CCpur), Senapati Sporting Club, Taphou Phyamai, TRYVC (Kamjong), Senapati Sporting Club (Reserve), KKYSO, and Teenstars (KPI).

Men’s Teams:

TRYVC (Kamjong), Senapati Sporting Club (Reserve), Prime Hostel (KPI), Mareiri, Youngster VC, BVC (CCpur), Senapati Sporting Club, Spartans (KPI), KKYSO, and DN Brothers (KPI).

The tournament will conclude with the finals and closing ceremony on 11th April 2025.
