Several Meitei valley CSOs condemn over viral video of Kuki-Zo women paraded naked

Imphal: Several civil bodies of Manipur in the valley have condemned the incident of two women belonging to the Kuki-Zo community being paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped in Kangpokpi district of which a video went viral recently.

Women Wing of Co-ordinating Committee of Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), AMUCO, AMOWOVA and Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, World Manipuri Women Federation and Manipur Women’s Federation (MWF) have strongly condemned the incident carried out by a mob on the backdrop of prevailing ethnic clash in Manipur and also slammed prime minister Narendra Modi for breaking his silence on Manipur violence only now.

Speaking to media at COCOMI office in Lamphelpat today, representative of COCOMI R.K. Tharaksana said the incident is shameful and a challenge to the Women Society. She, also questioned why the national media, waited until the commencement of the monsoon session of the Parliament to report the incident which took place on May 4. She slammed prime minister Modi for breaking his silence only after the video came out by ignoring the killings of many Meitei civilians and burning down of houses for 78 days.

AMUCO, AMOWOVA and Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup also condemned the May 4 incident as shameful. Briefing media at AMUCO Office in Kwakeithel in Imphal, AMUCO president Nando Luwang said that the Government of India must be held responsible for all the unwanted incidents occurring in Manipur including the May 4 incident. The prime minister should take note of the series of untoward incidents which unfolded in Manipur after the May 3 clash, he added. Nando also demanded relevant authorities to book all perpetrators and those miscreants who circulated the video defaming the two victims.

While Porei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup leader Laishram Memchoubi and AMOWOVA president Y Kunjarani called to understand the prevailing issue before erupting into agitation, Kunjarani also appealed to the Centre not to be one sided while delivering any verdicts on the ongoing issue.

World Manipuri Women Federation and Manipur Women’s Federation (MWF) slammed prime minister Narendra Modi for breaking his silence only after the release of the video.

Speaking to media at the World Manipuri Women Federation office in Langjing Achouba, Federation spokesperson Ningthoujam Kabita condemned the incident of disrobing and parading the two women as a heinous crime against women. She said the prime minister should equally address the killings of Meitei civilians, burning down of their houses, harassment, molestation and raping of Meitei women.

Briefing media at Manipur Women’s Federation office in Wangkhei Ningthempukhri Mapal today, MWF president Khundongbam Shini said, prime minister Narendra Modi breaking his silence over the viral video just ahead of Parliament session is taken in a serious manner. She asked if punishment would be given only to culprits in the viral video sparing those armed Kuki militants who killed many Meitei civilians.
