Imphal: Six students’ organizations in Manipur will organise a public consultation meeting on April 12 to discuss the demand for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur.
The six students’ bodies – AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIM – have been pressing the state government for the introduction of the NRC in the state while asserting that implementation of the NRC is the only long term policy to check ever increasing illegal immigrants in the state.
Leaders of the six students’ bodies asserted the importance of the NRC for the protection of the indigenous people of the state.

SUK president Ningthoujam Dhanakumar said that the six students’ bodies will continue to press the state government to introduce NRC in the state.
The future course of agitations to be launched will be taken after a public consultation scheduled on April 12, he said.
“We are hosting a public consultation meeting on April 12 to discuss on the demand (NRC introduction) raised by the six students’ bodies. We will invite all stakeholders, civil society organisations, educationists, intellectuals and professors of different universities in the state to participate in the discussion,” the SUK president said.

The mixing of illegal immigrants among the local populace is not an encouraging trend in the state. It will give an adverse impact to the demography of the state, he added.
“We, the six students’ bodies, have a firm stand that NRC must be introduced in the state with immediate effect. Without the NRC, the future of the indigenous people of the state is at dark,” he said.
He pointed out that despite the government’s drive, there has been an abnormal surge of population in some hill districts besides emergence of new villages in the reserved and protected forests.
