Storm wreaks havoc in parts of Manipur

Imphal: A powerful storm wreaked havoc in various parts of Manipur on Tuesday night, uprooting several houses, trees and electric posts in both the hills and the valley districts.The strong wind blew away sheets serving as roofs of several houses and institutions, and uprooted trees and electric poles causing power outages for hours. The power supply to almost all parts of the state was affected and it was restored only by the afternoon, official reports said. However, there were no reports of human casualties in the storm.

Major damages were, however, reported mainly from Bishnupur, Imphal West and Noney districts of the state.

According to reports, in Noney district, around 16 families were rendered homeless after their houses were razed by the powerful storm. They had to take shelter at their nearby relatives.

Reports said that besides razing of around 16 houses, roofs of several houses of the village and its adjoining areas were also blown away.

The powerful storm also damaged hundreds of houses and other structures in Imphal West and its neighbouring Bishnupur district after the roofs were blown away.

Maximum damages were reported in Konthoujam area of Imphal West district and its neighbouring Nambol area of Bishnupur district.

Members of the Development and Protection United Voluntary Organization today inspected the areas where damages were caused by the storm today.

They assessed the damages for onward submission to the pertinent authority for relief and rehabilitation.
