Strict segregation and disposal of waste in Ukhrul: DC Kengoo Zuringla

Ukhrul: In a joint meeting held at the DC Conference Hall on July 12, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla, along with representatives from various localities, discussed and tried to resolve key issues concerning waste management in the district.

Expressing her appreciation for the cooperative efforts of the localities of Ukhrul Headquarters, the DC, provided an overview of the waste management challenges faced by the district.

The following resolutions were unanimously agreed upon by all the members present at the meeting:

  1. It was decided that every household in Ukhrul Headquarters would be required to obtain a Waste Collection Card. These cards will be issued by the Small Town Committee (STC), ADC, Ukhrul, at a cost of Rs. 200. The Chairman or Secretary of each locality/tang will assume the responsibility of implementing this system within their respective jurisdiction.
  2. All households in Ukhrul District must adhere to the practice of segregating waste materials at the source. Specific items such as plastic, diapers, sanitary napkins, torn clothes, and expired medicines need to be separated for appropriate disposal. Disposing of waste items in unauthorized places such as roadsides, highways, and streams will result in a fine of Rs. 1000, and further legal action will be initiated against the violators.
  3. The STC, ADC, Ukhrul, will organize waste collection from Kharasom junction to the District Hospital in Hungpung. This collection will take place every day from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, excluding holidays.
  4. To educate and raise awareness among the general public regarding waste management, it was decided to display flex banners and posters at strategic locations throughout the district.

Due to lack of solid waste management in Ukhrul, the town has been reeling under huge pile of garbage for months. ADC has been on the look for dumping site as the current site has been restricted.

The department has now shifted the dumping site to a temporary location at Kasomphung, Old British road.
