Tangkhul Students’ Unions Opposes Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing in Kamjong District, Warns Govt

Ukhrul: The Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (Southern Tangkhul Students’ Union) and Zingsho Katamnao Long (Eastern Tangkhul Students’ Union) has voiced its strong opposition to the Centre and state government’s decision to carry out Indo-Myanmar border fencing in Kamjong district.

During a press conference held at Manipur Press Club on Wednesday, representatives from apex body of the Eastern Tangkhul Students’ Union and Southern Tangkhul Students’ Union expressed their discontent with the planned construction along Border Pillar Number 6 and Border Pillar Number 124.

President of Southern Tangkhul Students’ Union, Yarchuiso Kashung, stated that the move was unacceptable and called for an immediate withdrawal of the decision.

The President mentioned that a letter had already been submitted to Manipur Chief Minister through Phungyar MLA on September 20 this year, urging a halt to the border fencing. However, the government’s continued efforts to push forward with the project, without considering the concerns of Kamjong residents, were deemed unfortunate and disrespectful.

Yarchuiso Kashung warned that any attempt to impose the fencing project by force would be met with resistance. He also questioned the government’s reasoning behind calling Kamjong district “Chasad Kamjong,” implying it could create unnecessary tensions among different communities. He also emphasised that the Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar should not be withdrawn from Kamjong district.
