Tangkhul Women’s League felicitates the first Tangkhul Woman Chief

In an unprecedented event that could potentially change the course of history of the patriarchical Tangkuls, the “Village Authority and villagers of Hoomi” have given title of the “Head” of the village to HW Masophy, the widow of the deceased Headman. Subsequent upon the untimely demise of the patriarch HW Yaolei in March 2020, this transfer of authority ensued. Hoomi village is about 40 km west of Ukhrul district headquarters.

Traditionally title of the Chieftain or popularly known as Headman, upon his expiry or senility, is inherited by the male next to kin of the Headman or Chief, as his birthright. In other words, it is a patrimonial inheritance of the eldest son.

The Tangkhul Women’s League (Tangkhul Shanao Long) on Thursday felicitated this transfer of authority to a “woman” calling it “a giant step” that shows pace of development to all Tangkhuls, especially the younger generation.

The apex organization of the Tangkhul women in an official communiqué commended the move by saying it was an act of honour and emancipation of women, which all Tangkhuls should emulate.

The TSL statement also wished “Achon Kharar” (Headwoman) HW Masophy luck and success.
