“It’s very important for our country to also respect the Tangkhuls, people of Manipur, Nagaland and the Northeast, While we try to learn their languages, it is very important for them also to appreciate our culture, the way we look, eat and who we are. This country is about equality but I see many a times, we are being treated differently- sometimes out of curiosity which is fair and fine but sometimes because a few people think they are superior… No one can change arrogant people. Only our way of life can change those who are stubborn. What we have to learn as indigenous people of the Northeast is that we should not be ashamed of ourselves,” the chief guest said.

He continued, “It is also the duty of the Government of India to teach about our history, our culture and language because respect is not a one way street. We have allowed this inequality and discrimination to continue for too long. People like us cannot be individualistic. Only those who have power and control can be individualistic. Until the time people do not understand, appreciate the region where we come from we will have to be uniquely different. Be proud of your history, ask for respect because respect will not come in a free plate. Don’t forget that our language, traditions, history and our identity does not come by becoming one, it comes by becoming partners.”
