UKHRUL: Thadou Inpi-Sadar Hills and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) have condemned the killing of a farmer at Govajang village in Kangpokpi district, alleging that cadres of the NSCN-IM and ZUF-Kamson group were behind the attack.

In separate statements the two organisations identified the deceased as Haokholal Singsit, who they said was shot dead while working in his paddy field with his wife at around 4 pm on Saturday at Govajang village under T. Vaichong Sub-Division.

Describing the killing as an attack on an unarmed civilian, Thadou Inpi said Singsit was engaged in peaceful agricultural work when he was shot. It said the incident was a direct assault on the right to life and livelihood.

The Thadou Inpi noted that security forces had conducted search and area domination operations in the locality two days before the incident to prevent such attacks. However, it alleged that cadres of the NSCN-IM and ZUF-Kamson group were still able to enter the IT Road area and carry out the attack.

“The people of Sadar Hills deserve to cultivate their fields and live peacefully without the threat of violence,” the statement said.

Thadou Inpi urged the Manipur government to strengthen security along the IT Road and adjoining villages, arrest those responsible, and ensure that armed groups do not operate with impunity. It also expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and the people of Govajang.

CoTU also condemned the killing, alleging that the attack was carried out by what it described as “Tangkhul-led armed terrorists” of the NSCN-IM and ZUF-Kamson group.

The CoTU said it was concerning that the incident occurred despite recent security operations in the area. It called on the government to review its security preparedness, prevent further attacks, and ensure justice for the victim.

The allegations made by the two organisations could not be independently verified, and there has been no official statement identifying those responsible for the killing.
