Thoyee VA: ‘Thengin Baite not Listed in Thawai Kuki Village Records’, Opposes Illigitimate Land Offer to Army

UKHRUL: The Thoyee (Thawai) Village Authority has issued a clarification regarding the identity of one of the individuals reported to have been killed in the March 12 incident involving Tangkhul volunteers and armed Kuki militants.

Thawai Kuki is a hamlet that falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Thoyee (Thawai) Tangkhul village. The Thoyee (Thawai) Village Authority, as the competent authority is responsible for compiling and submitting census-related information, including Hill House Assessment records received from Thawai Kuki hamlet, to the relevant government departments for successive time periods.

Referring to media reports identifying one of the deceased as Thengin Baite, son of Late Sempao Baite, and alleging that he was from Thawai Kuki village, the Village Authority stated upon verification of the 2025 Hill House Assessment records and the electoral rolls does not support this claim. The records, it said, show that neither Thengin Baite nor his father, Late Sempao Baite, are listed as residents of Thawai Kuki village. On this basis, the authority stated that the individuals concerned do not belong to Thawai Kuki village and may be from another village.

The Village Authority further noted that the “so-called Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul had demanded the permanent stationing of an Assam Rifles or Indian Army battalion at Thawai Kuki village.” It also alleged that the Kuki village chief had offered 50 acres of land for this purpose without the knowledge or consent of Thoyee (Thawai) Tangkhul village, which it described as the legitimate owner of the land. The authority stated that Thoyee village strongly opposes any such proposal made without its authorization and warned against any actions undertaken without prior approval.

The Thoyee (Thawai) Village Authority urged all stakeholders, including government authorities and media organisations, to exercise due diligence in verifying facts and to refrain from circulating misleading reports or taking action based on inaccurate information.
