The Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (TKLI) in its general election today elected the incumbent general secretary, WS Thanshing as the new president of the Union for the tenure 2022-23 at Lanthungching village.

According to TKLI press release, today’s election was a close contest between WS Thanshing of Langol unit and Mingachan Mungkung of Nagaram unit.

Zingranso Shatsang from Laingangching village and Ningthemung Horam from Pushing village, both from DM University unit were elected unopposed to the posts of speaker and deputy speaker respectively. Both are presently pursuing LLM degree in LMS Law college of DM University.

The release stated, “In the early part of 1930s, out of necessity and a creation of its own, Tangkhul students in pursuit of their academic career, formed the Tangkhul Education Union Fund, primarily with an objective of building healthy academic atmosphere by providing financial assistance and scholarship to the poor and needy students. However, considering the problems and issues coupled with various injustice and exploitation faced by the Tangkhul students, it was finally mutated into full-fledged student body as Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (TKLI) in the later part of 1930s. Since then, with these basic outlooks, TKLI has been functioning with much vigour and strength to overcome challenges, unforeseen circumstances and struggles which we encountered in socio-political and academic activities among various others in greater Imphal inhabited by different communities”.

TKLI also has a long glorious tradition of peace and harmony amongst various communities living in greater Imphal for decades, the release added.

WS Thanshing has a degree in MA (History) and hails from Teinem village.
