Imphal, August 3: A high-level visit of a top security official and a strategic decision marked a turning point in the evolving security landscape of Manipur. Against the backdrop of unrest and political stalemate, Additional Director General (ADG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) Eastern Command, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, spent two intense days reviewing frontline operations in Manipur.

The BSF officer had reached Imphal on August 1.

From the dusty posts of Thoubal to the forested stretches of Churachandpur, the BSF ADG moved across BSF deployment zones, meeting commanders and jawans face to face. In Bishnupur and at the Subsidiary Training Centre in Churachandpur, he took stock of the mood on the ground. The message he delivered to the troops was crisp but firm: “Each one of you has a critical role to play in stabilising the law and order situation in Manipur.”

His address during a Sainik Sammelan in Churachandpur carried an undertone of urgency. “Your dedication and professionalism are essential during this time of unrest,” he said, encouraging personnel to stay resolute. “The peace and security of the people depend on our collective efforts.”

The BSF ADG flew back to Kolkata on August 3.

Since ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, Manipur has seen over 250 deaths and the displacement of more than 60,000 individuals. With law and order deteriorating and political cracks widening especially within the ruling BJP the state was placed under President’s Rule on February 13, suspending the legislative assembly.

As the security forces recalibrate their strategy and militant factions signal selective cooperation, Manipur finds itself poised between prolonged conflict and the faint glimmer of resolution. For now, the boots on the ground remain watchful, as the state continues to walk a tightrope between law enforcement and reconciliation.
