Imphal, Dec 23: Rich homage was paid to journalist Thangjam Dwijamani on his 12th death anniversary at his memorial complex located on Thangmeiband Cheiraoching, Imphal West on Monday.
Dwijamani was covering a rally at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai area in Imphal on December 24, 2012 when he was killed by police firing on protesters. Manipur police had said the journalist was shot by accident while they were trying to disperse protesters with live ammunition. Five police officers were suspended in connection with the killing.

He was a cameraman for the news division of the satellite-distributed Prime News channel that covers northeast India.
Participating in today’s event, Bijoy Kakchingtabam, president of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), appealed to the public to help prevent journalists from disrupting their coverage amid the current predicament.
Family members of the late journalist, leaders of Naharol Leishemba Club, Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai, Meira Paibis and many journalists attended the death anniversary function. The attendees offered floral tribute to Dwijamani on the occasion.

Speaking at the event, AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam also cited that the journalists in Manipur have faced violence, intimidation, deaths and other threats while executing their duties, and added that despite the awkward situation the journalists have been tirelessly working for the land and its people.
In the current climate in Manipur, journalists have faced many challenges such as frequent Internet restrictions, harassment and assault, legal action, and difficulty covering news.
During Dwijamani’s death anniversary programme, Thangmeiband United Club president Pratap Leishangthem expressed his desire to build a memorial for slain journalists of the state at Cheiraoching and underscored the need to highlight the role played by the late journalists to the present and future generations.
