Ukhrul, June 5: The NSCN-Yung Aung group on Thursday said that “two of its cadres under the Western Command were killed in a deadly ambush by Indian forces near Langkhu village inside the Myanmar-occupied Nagaland.”

A press release issued by the Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP) of the group said the incident occurred at approximately 10 AM on Thursday, when a Naga Army patrol unit reportedly came under heavy fire from Indian forces. The clash, described as a well-coordinated ambush, resulted in the deaths of Sgt. Maj. Nyaklung and Lance Cpl. Neyung Aung.

NSCN-YA then said that despite being heavily outnumbered, the Naga soldiers mounted a determined defense that lasted for an hour, adding that the unit was eventually able to retrieve the bodies of the fallen cadres.

While the group extended its condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased, NSCN-YA said, “The entire NSCN/GPRN and the Naga Army deeply mourn the loss of our two fallen soldiers and we salute them for the extreme sacrifice for the cause of Naga sovereignty.”

In recognition of their actions, the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Naga Army has posthumously promoted both soldiers to their next higher rank, citing their “extra-ordinary bravery.”
