Tribal Youth Council Alleges Threat Over Commission Appointment Statement

Imphal, August 6: The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), General Headquarters, has taken serious note of an alleged telephonic threat made to the President of TYCM and the Council by Mr. Joseph Rongmei, younger brother of Mr. Thuigai Mathieu, former Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST).

The incident reportedly occurred on August 6, 2025, at 10:54 AM through a phone call made from the number +91 9677259182. According to TYCM, the threat is linked to a press statement it issued on August 5, 2025, urging the Government of Manipur to issue a public notification inviting applications from eligible tribal candidates of Manipur for the appointment or nomination of a new Chairperson of the MSCST, following the completion of the incumbent’s three-year tenure.

The Council clarified that it holds no favoritism or bias toward any individual and has not mentioned any names in its press statements or through any media channel. TYCM stated that its only concern is ensuring a fair, transparent, and politically unbiased appointment process.

The Council has preserved the recording of the alleged threatening call as evidence. Mr. Joseph Rongmei has been invited to appear before the TYCM General Headquarters at Dewlahland, Imphal, on August 7, 2025, at 4:30 PM, to provide both written and verbal explanation regarding the incident. The invitation letter was officially served to him on August 6.

TYCM stated that failure to comply with the invitation will compel it to initiate legal proceedings before a competent court or take any other action deemed appropriate.
