Ukhrul, Jan 30: On October 16, 1919, the Ukhrul Sub-Division and the Tamenglong Sub-Division were established, making them the first Sub-Divisions in Manipur. LL Peter and William Shaw, both from Ireland, were appointed as the first Sub-Division Officers (SDOs) of Ukhrul and Tamenglong, respectively.

Ukhrul District was initially designated as a Sub-Division in 1919 and was upgraded to a District in 1969. Originally, it consisted of eight blocks, but following the bifurcation of Kamjong District in 2016, it now has four Block Development Offices.

After 106 years, Ukhrul District is blessed with its first woman Deputy Commissioner. Kengoo Zuringla (IAS) was appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul on May 18, 2023, following the unfortunate events of May 3, 2023.
