Ukhrul Police Issues Strict Festive-Season Traffic Advisory

Published on

UKHRUL: With traffic volume surging in Ukhrul town ahead of Christmas, the Ukhrul District Police has issued an order enforcing new traffic regulations across the town with immediate effect.

The order — No. CO-10/2025-SP (UKL) — states that the measures are aimed at preventing congestion, ensuring smooth traffic flow, and maintaining public safety during the high-movement period. The regulations will remain in force until further notice.

As part of the directive, several stretches in Ukhrul town have now been designated as No Parking Zones, with a dedicated police team to regulate traffic in each assigned area:

DSP (CAR) Md. Syed Ajijur Rahman has been appointed overall in-charge of the arrangements, working in coordination with the Officer-in-Charge of the Town Command Post.

According to the advisory, all personnel assigned to traffic points will remain stationed at their designated posts throughout the regulation period.

The key Regulations Announced for immediate enforcement:

  • Roadside parking in designated No Parking Areas is banned. Vehicles must use only marked parking zones.
  • Heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter the town area between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • The maximum speed limit in and around Ukhrul town has been capped at 20 km/h.
  • The entire stretch of Ukhrul town will function as a “No Overtaking Zone.”
  • Street vendors and temporary stalls have been instructed not to encroach onto the roadway.
  • Footpaths must be kept unobstructed to allow free pedestrian movement.
  • Shopkeepers have been told to ensure goods are not displayed or placed on the road.

“Any violation of this order shall attract apporpriate action under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, and other applicable laws, including imposition of fines, and removal of encroachments,” the notice issued on Monday said.

In an appeal, Ukhrul Police acknowledged that the district does not have a sanctioned Traffic Police Unit nor personnel exclusively trained for traffic duties. Most available manpower, it said, is tied up with law and order, security arrangements, crime prevention, escort duties, and emergency response.

Despite this, the department has begun regulating traffic in the town by pulling limited staff from various police stations and units. The arrangements, the police said, are being made “despite severe manpower constraints” in response to repeated public requests.

According to the notice, the festive rush has led to a sharp increase in the number of people and vehicles entering the town area, resulting in long delays, roadside congestion, and difficulties for pedestrians and emergency services.

The police also pointed to recurring problems—vehicles stopping along busy stretches for shopping, roadside parking, non-compliance with traffic instructions, and poor awareness of one-way restrictions. These actions, it said, slow down traffic and obstruct emergency movement.

Given the situation, the police appealed for cooperation from shopkeepers, motorists, transporters, and passenger-service operators to follow the traffic regulations issued for the season and avoid any form of obstruction.

Stating that public cooperation is essential for effective regulation, the notice concluded with a reminder that: “No system succeeds without the support of the people it serves.”
