UKHRUL: Vungzagin Valte, Kuki-Zo MLA from Thanlon constituency and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, passed away today after succumbing to injuries sustained during the violent ethnic clashes in Manipur in May 2023.
Valte had been staying in Churachandpur following prolonged treatment in Delhi. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was airlifted from Imphal to Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, for advanced medical care on February 8, 2026.
Valte, a three-time legislator who also served as an advisor to Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on tribal affairs was among the first victims of the ethnic violence that erupted in the state.
According to reports, Valte was on his way to his official quarters on May 4, 2023 after attending a high-level meeting chaired by the then Chief Minister, where he had advocated for peace on behalf of the Zohnahthlak community. While returning from the meeting, he was attacked by a large mob near RIMS Road in Imphal West district.
He sustained critical injuries to his skull and left eye in the assault, which left him severely incapacitated.
