Imphal, Feb 10: Intense speculations are doing the rounds as to who is likely to become the next chief minister of Manipur after N Biren Singh’s resignation on Sunday evening.

Sources said that high-octane parleys and lobbies are underway among the Manipur legislators on the matter. At the same time, speculations are also doing the rounds that Manipur is likely to be left with suspended animation until a new chief minister is chosen among the ruling MLAs.

Interestingly, BJP Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra has been in Imphal since Sunday, while holding a series of meetings with the BJP MLAs. What transpired in all these meetings is not known. However, it is likely that the BJP leader is trying to work out for a smooth transition of leadership in the state.

The sources also said that things may become clear in a couple of days’ time whether the suspended animation will be in place or about the next chief minister of Manipur.

It may be recalled here that Biren Singh had resigned on Sunday evening amid mounting pressure from various quarters who had been threatening to move a no-trust motion and a floor test.

Biren’s resignation came one day ahead of the Manipur Legislative Assembly session, and nearly two years after the Meitei-Kuki violence broke out in Manipur.

Manipur has been facing violence between the Meiteis and the Kukis since May 3, 2023.

In March 2017, Biren was sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur for the first time. He was the first-ever BJP Chief Minister in Manipur.
