A 33-year-old woman succumbed to rabies on Monday after she was bitten by a dog a month ago in Ukhrul’s Tangrei locality.
The deceased, Floriah Kaping, daughter of Athot Kaping was bitten at home when a stray dog approached her home and started fighting with her dog. While trying to fend off the unidentified dog, she tried to chain her dog but in the process she was bitten on her hand, family member told this reporter.
Floriah was taken to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal on Saturday noon, but she could not be helped, added the family.
Presence of mad dog in Greenland was also reported in the area in the past weeks, and a number of other people bitten by dog were also reported in Ukhrul town, the family member said.
The family member speaking to Ukhrul Times expressed resentment that dog owners are taking absolutely no precaution given that July-August is mating season, adding that “anti-rabies vaccines should be inoculated from the nearest veterinary, and said that Floriah’s death could have been avoidable.”
The district authority should send sos given the season, and the family of the deceased should be duly compensated, the local added.
Floriah breath her last on Monday afternoon at her Tangrei residence. She was a teacher in Savio Higher Secondary School, Ukhrul.
