Women Vendors of Imphal Protest Government Inaction Amidst Year-Long Violence in Manipur

Imphal: A large number of women vendors of iconic all-women-run market in Imphal on Thursday on staged a protest against the “inaction” on the part of the government, both at the Centre and in the state, to end the ongoing violence in Manipur which is prevailing for more than a year now.

Suspending their business of the day, the women vendors staged the protest under the aegis of the Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace.

Talking to the reporters at the protest site, co-convener of the committee, Y Ibeyaima Devi demanded the transfer of the state police chief and removal of the security advisor to Manipur government, while alleging that despite prior inputs they did nothing to thwart the fresh wave of violence that hit Jiribam district.

She also alleged security lapses on the part of the state DGP with regard to the recent ambush on a convoy of the chief minister’s security on NH-37.

She alleged that just after the formation of a new government at the Centre, the Kukis started their fresh offensive against the Meiteis.

She said that the Centre as well as the state government did not take the crisis in the state seriously as shown by the recent wave of violence that hit Jiribam district.
