Kohima, September 14: The 24th Naga Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy 2024 kicked off on the evening of September 14 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, under the theme “Goal for Peace.” The tournament, organized annually by the Angami Students’ Union (ASU), honors the memory of student martyrs Lt. Kekuojalie Sachü and Lt. Vikhozo Yhoshü.
A total of 43 teams, including nine from Manipur, have registered for the prestigious competition, which will run until October 5. The inaugural match featured a contest between Red Scars FC and Mez & Co.

Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton, the chief guest at the event, commended the ASU for organizing the tournament and underscored the significance of promoting unity through sports. He emphasized that the tournament’s theme, “Goal for Peace,” symbolizes the values of teamwork and cooperation, not only in football but also in society, embodying the broader aspirations for peace and progress.
Patton acknowledged the role of youth as ambassadors of peace and unity, encouraging participants to foster lasting connections through their sportsmanship. He also paid tribute to the martyrs, whose sacrifices continue to remind the people of the importance of peace and unity amidst challenges.
In his address, Patton also highlighted the Nagaland government’s ongoing commitment, under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to supporting initiatives that promote peace and development, particularly through investments in sports infrastructure. He further praised Hokato Hotozhe Sema for securing a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Paralympics, urging participants to compete with passion and fairness.
The event concluded with Patton expressing optimism for the future of sports in Nagaland, encouraging athletes to contribute to the state’s growing legacy of sporting excellence.
Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Medovi Rhi delivered a message of solidarity, while ASU president Khriesamhalie David Mere gave the welcome address. The inaugural program was chaired by organizing committee convenor Vizokho Zashümo, and the oath was administered by ASU games and sports secretary Metebo-o Sote.

The evening also featured performances from artists including Vetho, Moko, Mengu, Guru Gee, Tutu, Litsuku, Vidi & Vivo, as well as a special performance by the 15th NAP (IR) Mahila Band.
This year, the prize for the tournament champions has been increased to ₹3 lakh, while the runners-up will receive ₹1.8 lakh. Semi-finalists will be awarded ₹40,000 each, and quarter-finalists will receive ₹25,000 each. Additionally, individual awards for Best Midfielder, Best Defender, and Top Scorer have been set at ₹10,000 each, and the Player of the Tournament will receive ₹50,000.
