UKHRUL: A nine-year-old girl was critically injured after a massive landslide struck a rented house at Khampasom locality in Ukhrul Town shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
The incident, reported by Yarsho Free Thinker, occurred at around 12.30 a.m. when a portion of the hillside above the house gave way following incessant rain. The mud and debris crashed into the RCC house of Mahai NK of Chingai Village, damaging two rooms and three kitchens.
The injured child, identified as Yakhari Kasar, daughter of Chihanso Kasar and Rinchui Jamang of Khangkhui Phungdhar (Khunou) Village, was trapped beneath the debris. Residents said only her head was visible after the collapse. Neighbours and fellow tenants immediately dug through the mud and managed to pull her out alive.

She was rushed to the District Hospital, Ukhrul, where doctors said she remains in critical condition. According to family members, preliminary medical findings indicate that both her legs have been paralysed. X-ray examinations have also reportedly revealed internal bleeding and fluid accumulation in her abdomen.
Another occupant of the house, Leiyachan Jamang (23), daughter of Malungmi Jamang and Marina Jamang of Chahong Phungdhar Village, sustained injuries to her legs and back. She is reported to be out of danger.
Yakhari, the eldest of four siblings, is a student of KTL Higher Secondary School. Owing to her family’s financial hardship, she had been staying with her aunt in Ukhrul Town to continue her studies. Her aunt works part-time at a local shop, and the two had been living in a rented room at Mahai NK’s residence.
The report said the family, already struggling financially, is now facing mounting medical expenses. They have appealed to the Government, civil society organisations and members of the public to extend financial assistance for Yakhari’s treatment and recovery.
According to a report by Ukhrul Now,, four children were critically injured in the landslide. They were identified as Shingmathing, a Class XI student of St. Joseph’s College; Woryar, a Class VII student of Junior Academy; Phungramngam, a Class IX student of Junior Academy; and Riri (Yakhari Kasar), a Class IV student of KTL Higher Secondary School.
Shingmathing, Woryar and Phungramngam are siblings and children of Pamchui Awungshi of Khamasom Phungrei Village, while Riri is from Khangkhui Village.
The report said Phungramngam, who was sleeping on the floor when the landslide struck, suffered the most severe injuries. He sustained serious rib injuries after being partially buried beneath a collapsed concrete wall and debris. His sisters, Shingmathing and Woryar, who were sleeping on a nearby bed, were also injured after being hit by the landslide while reportedly trying to rescue their brother. Riri, who was sleeping in another room, was likewise partially buried under the debris.
