Senapati: The United Naga Council (UNC) in a press release on Monday said it is crucial need for a Naga representative in Parliament, urging Nagas to unite behind the candidate identified by the Naga People’s Front (NPF) for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

The UNC’s statement issued by its president NG. Lorho and general secretary Vareiyo Shatsang, it stressed the historical significance of having a Naga voice in Parliament, particularly during a time when negotiations regarding the Indo-Naga issue are reaching a critical juncture. The UNC highlighted the long-standing desire of Nagas in Manipur for proper representation and advocacy of their rights and aspirations at the national level.

During a presidential Council meeting held on October 27, 2023, the UNC reaffirmed its commitment to fielding a consensus candidate chosen from among the intending candidates for the Lok Sabha election. This decision was further supported by a joint meeting of intending candidates and Naga organizations under the UNC’s supervision on February 27, where candidates pledged to respect and support the chosen consensus candidate, the statement said.

The UNC also underlined the importance of the NPF’s stance on the Indo-Naga peace process and the integration of contiguous Naga areas. Unlike national parties, the NPF operates based on Naga political aspirations and identity rather than directives from Delhi, according to the UNC.

Reflecting on past successes, the UNC noted the achievement of having a Naga representative elected in the 17th Lok Sabha Election in 2019, which was supported by the NPF and the unified support of the Naga people.

Urging the Nagas to prioritize the greater interest of the Naga people over political affiliations, personal relationships, and sectarian interests, the UNC called on all Naga tribe hohos/councils, civil society organizations, and regional bodies to support the candidate endorsed by the NPF.
