Tension prevailed at a private hospital in Imphal on Tuesday after a woman died following childbirth. Family members and local people alleged that the woman died due to medical negligence.
Family, relatives and locals where the deceased woman hailed from also attempted to storm the residence of the doctor here. Timely intervention by the police, however, prevented the agitating people from causing damages to the hospital properties and the doctor’s house.
The woman who died on her third delivery was identified as Pheirembam Panthoi, (38), wife of P Chingkheinganba @ Abung of Khangempalli Nganappi Thong, Imphal West district. She died at Raj Medicity hospital in Imphal’s North AOC area where she was admitted for a delivery case on Sunday. She breathed her last at the ICU ward of the hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday after giving birth to the baby boy.
Hospital sources explained that her condition became critical after “non-stop bleeding” after delivery.
“Everything was fine at the time of delivery but she had to undergo a surgery after excessive bleeding started”, said the hospital authority. “Doctors did their best to save her. This was an unfortunate incident”, it added while trying to convince the family members of the deceased after a large number of relatives and local people converged at the hospital.
However, the family and relatives alleged that she died due to medical negligence.
A large number of police already arrived there prevented the people from indulging in any violent activity.
Leaving behind the dead body of the woman, the angry local people proceeded towards the residence of the concerned doctor at Keishamthong Hodam Leirak. Police, however, blocked them on the way before reaching the residence of the doctor.
