Manipur CM Biren Incinerates Over 314 KGS of Illegal Drugs in Anti-Narcotics Drive

Ukhrul, Jan 25 (DIPR): According to a press release from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh incinerated a total of 314.471 kgs of confiscated illegal drugs. The incineration took place as part of the Drugs Disposal Programme held at the Shija Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng. The programme was organised by the Manipur Police Department, Government of Manipur.

The press release further mentions that during the event, the Chief Minister addressed the gathering, reiterating that the “War on Drugs” initiative was launched after the formation of the BJP government to tackle the growing drug menace in the state. He emphasized that drug abuse had significantly affected the youth not only in the North Eastern states but had also spread to mainland cities across the country.

The Chief Minister noted that today’s drug disposal marks the sixth such event conducted by the government as part of its ongoing efforts to curb the drug problem. Despite facing substantial resistance, criticism, and various challenges, the press release states that the government remains resolute in continuing the “War on Drugs” campaign.

Biren Singh acknowledged that the unprecedented crisis in the state is one of the outcomes of the government’s ‘War on Drugs’ campaign. He also highlighted the extensive destruction of poppy plantations across various districts of the state. He also appreciated the collective efforts of the State Police Force, Central Reserve Police Forces, Border Security Forces, Forest Department, Army, Assam Rifles, among others involved in the poppy destruction drive.

The press release also mentions that the Chief Minister outlined a two-way mechanism to combat the drug menace, focusing on both the seizure of drugs and, on the other hand, offering sympathy and support to drug addicts by providing shelter in rehabilitation centres to help them live drug-free lives.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stated that the number of drug addicts in the state has decreased. He also mentioned that the government has already sanctioned around Rs. 5 crore for the construction of a rehabilitation center in Ukhrul district.

He further appealed to the public for their cooperation and support to combat the drug issues in the State.

The press release also noted that the drugs incinerated today included 9.884 kgs of heroin powder, 244.409 kgs of Brown Sugar, 26.239 kgs of WY tablets, 661 grams of SP capsules, 493 grams of N-10 tablets, 505 grams of Pseudoephedrine tablets, and 32.280 kgs of Ganja, bringing the total weight to 314.471 kgs.

The programme was attended by several key officials, including Forest Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, IPR Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan, CAF and PD Minister Leishangthem Sushindro Meitei, Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo Singh, Education Minister Thounaojam Basantakumar Singh, MLA of Lamlai AC Khongbantabam Ibomcha Singh, MLA of Lamsang AC Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, as well as various administrative secretaries and senior police officers.
