Ukhrul, June 18: Advocate Pushpa Gurumayum has been elected as the first-ever woman secretary of the High Court Bar Association of Manipur (HCBAM). The elections for the Managing Committee and Office Bearers of HCBAM for the term 2025-2027 was held on June 14 at the High Court of Manipur’s premises.
Pushpa was elected in an unreserved post by defeating her only rival – a male candidate. This comes at a time when the Supreme Court has been issuing directions for reserving particular posts for women in certain Bar Associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA). the HCBAM said in a statement.

Another remarkable feat for the Manipur HC’s Bar was that seven of the 13 newly elected office bearers were women.
According to HCBAM, elections were announced for 15 posts of the Managing Committee, of which, election was contested for the posts of vice president, secretary and two posts of the senior members of the Managing Committee. In the remaining posts including the President, election was uncontested and two out of the five posts for the executive members stood vacant for want of nominations, it stated.

Naorem Kumarjit Singh, senior advocate has been elected as the president; Naorem Umakanta Singh, senior advocate as vice president; Pushpa Gurumayum, advocate as secretary; Geetarani Waikhom and Mayonkui Ngalung, advocates as joint secretaries; Sillori Laisom, advocate as joint secretary (Lady); Sapam Biswajit Meitei and Rarry Mangsatabam, senior advocates as Managing Committee (Senior Members); Aribam Gautam Sharma, Chongtham Sundari Devi and Kshetrimayum Harichhaya Chanu, advocates as executive members; Thoudam Sobhana Devi, advocate as lady member and Hodam Bisheshwari Devi, advocate has been elected as young advocate member.
The newly elected members will resume charge on Monday, the HCBAM stated.
