Imphal, June 17: Justice A. Bimol, Executive Chairman of the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA), expressed strong disapproval after the Imphal West District Deputy Commissioner (DC) failed to attend Manipur High Court Chief Justice K. Somashekar’s visit to a relief camp at Pravabati College, Mayang Imphal, on Tuesday. The DC has been summoned to appear before the High Court by 10:30 AM on Wednesday.

Justice Bimol highlighted the dire conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and stressed that government assistance should reach all affected individuals, whether they are staying in relief camps or not. He noted that many have been forced to leave camps in search of livelihood opportunities.

The visit was part of the ongoing Legal Aid Awareness Campaign across relief camps in the state, organised by MASLSA under the guidance of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

Justice Bimol emphasised that since the Manipur conflict began on May 3, 2023, members of the judiciary, including High Court judges, judicial officers, and bar associations, have been supporting IDPs through contributions from their own salaries.

Justice Bimol mentioned that the recent visit of five senior Supreme Court judges, including the Chief Justice of India, to strife-torn Manipur prompted the expansion of legal aid programs across Manipur’s relief camps. MASLSA, under NALSA’s leadership, has been actively assisting displaced families with legal and humanitarian support.

Speaking on the occasion, Manipur High Court Chief Justice K. Somashekar reiterated that the Constitution guarantees equal rights and justice to all citizens. He assured that the judiciary remains committed to ensuring justice for displaced persons affected by the ongoing crisis.

The absence of the Imphal West DC has raised questions about administrative responsiveness, with the High Court seeking an explanation.
