Imphal, September 12: The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, has urged the Union Government to take swift and impartial measures to address what it described as a “severe crisis” at the National Sports University (NSU), Imphal. The call was made on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state, with AIMS expressing confidence that his leadership could help resolve long-standing governance issues.
In a memorandum submitted to Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and also shared with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, AIMS detailed several concerns affecting the university.

Key issues raised include:
• Leadership gap: The failure to appoint a regular Vice Chancellor, despite two selection interviews.
• Alleged misuse of authority: Officiating Vice Chancellor Dr. Shyam Sundar Rath and Registrar Dr. Laishram Dibamani Singh were accused of appointing 15 staff members without public notifications.
• Irregularities in faculty recruitment: AIMS cited the case of a recent interview for a guest lecturer in boxing, where a local national-level boxer was interviewed extensively but overlooked in favour of an outsider who faced only a brief interaction.
• Stalled relocation: The lack of progress in shifting the NSU to its permanent campus at Koutruk.
AIMS said the continuation of the current officiating leadership would further undermine the institution’s credibility and derail its founding mission of propelling India’s sporting talent to Olympic success.

“The NSU, which came into existence to strengthen India’s sporting spirit and global ambitions, must be saved at all costs,” AIMS stated.
The organisation appealed for immediate intervention, stressing the need to replace the current officiating Vice Chancellor and Registrar and to initiate an independent inquiry into the allegations.
