IMPHAL/UKHRUL: Union home minister Amit Shah is likely to visit Manipur later this month, chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said on Tuesday, while making it clear that the exact date of the visit is yet to be finalised.

“The union home minister is likely to visit Manipur in October, but the exact date is not known yet,” the chief minister said.
The press conference was attended by deputy chief minister Losii Dikho, government spokesperson Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, and Dr Thokchom Radheshyam.
The proposed visit comes amid the continuing crisis in Manipur, with issues surrounding the conflict and displacement remaining major concerns in the state. It also comes against the backdrop of a strong demand from sections of the people and civil society organisations for the conduct and announcement of the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year.
The NRC demand has been a key issue in recent public campaigns in the state, with organisations calling for the exercise to be taken up before the Census.
The Chief Minister was responding to questions from the media during a press conference held after the Cabinet meeting.
The press conference was primarily organised to highlight the Manipur Cabinet’s expression of gratitude to prime minister Narendra Modi for completing 25 years of public service. Khemchand and government spokesperson Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh also outlined various development projects and initiatives undertaken by the state government.
No specific programme or itinerary for Amit Shah’s proposed visit has been announced so far.
