Ukhrul, June 8: Situation in Imphal has turned tense after the reported arrest of Arambai Tenggol’s General Headquarters (GHQ) chief, Kanan Singh allegedly by security forces on Saturday night.

Following the arrests, large numbers of Arambai Tenggol members and its units have launched protests at Uripok in Imphal, intensifying the demand to release Kanan Singh.

Unconfirmed reports suggest injuries have occurred during the agitation, including that of a journalist, though official details are yet to be ascertained. Multiple gunshots were reportedly heard in Imphal amid the ongoing protests.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, is said to be closely monitoring the situation.

The Government of Manipur’s Home Department issued an urgent order late Saturday night, suspending internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN services, for five days in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts. The shutdown came into effect from 11:45 PM on June 7, 2025.

It may be mentioned that the members of Arambai Tenggol in February 2025 had handed over large quantity of weapons at the 1st Manipur Rifles Complex in Imphal. The move was seen as a response to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s directive urging the surrender of illegal arms within seven days to the youths of Manipur state, roiled in conflict since May 3, 2023.
