GUWAHATI, NOV 10 (SHABD): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday (November 9, 2025) that the State Cabinet has approved the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which seeks to prohibit the practice of polygamy in the state.

Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Sarma said that those convicted under the proposed law may face up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. The Bill is scheduled to be tabled in the Assembly on November 25.

The Chief Minister added that certain exemptions may apply to areas under the Sixth Schedule and that a dedicated fund will be set up to support victims of polygamy to help them continue with their lives.
