Addressing the cabinet’s decision through a video conference from Delhi, Chief Minister Himanta explained that three years ago beef was prohibited within a 5-kilometer radius of religious places like temples and monasteries in the state which had been successful. Building on this success, the government decided to extend the ban to cover the entire state. “From now on, the ban on beef will be applicable everywhere in Assam,” Dr. Sarma stated. He added that those who violate the ban will face penalties including imprisonment.
