Ukhrul: The Assam Rifles (AR) has strongly refuted an article published by Ukhrul Times on May 18, 2024, under the headline, “Border Villages at Kamjong Accuse Indian Security Forces of Involvement in the Ongoing Myanmar War,” on Monday. The Assam Rifles stated that the accusation “paints an unduly alarming picture of Kamjong but overlooks the critical role of the Armed Forces in maintaining security and stability in this volatile border region.”

The rebuttal emphasized that “the Assam Rifles (AR), India’s oldest paramilitary force, has a long-standing mandate to protect India’s northeastern borders. The deployment of armed forces in Kamjong, Manipur is essential and an operational requirement to prevent infiltration, movement of contraband, and arms trafficking.”

Further, the AR clarified that due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, influx of refugees into border villages and possibilities of insurgents entering disguised as refugees have raised security concerns. “Thus, the deployment of AR near border villages aims to thwart nefarious activities and ensure the safety of the population in border areas,” the Assam Rifles maintained.

Allegations of AR personnel crossing borders and using quadcopters to drop bombs, as well as purported biases, are baseless, it maintained.

It assured that the “Indian security forces are committed to maintaining strict vigilance over the border, patrols by security forces are conducted uniformly and impartially, focusing solely on maintaining peace and security.”

Furthermore, the rebuttal added, “Actions of the security forces are guided by the operational requirements and ensure that illegal activities do not undermine the safety and stability of local communities.”

The purpose of the news article, the Assam Rifles, stated “is likely to mislead the public,” noting that “Accurate reporting is crucial to reflect these efforts and avoid sensationalism that could exacerbate an already fragile situation.”
