NH-202 Blockade: Bandh on Litan–Shangkai Road Lifted Following Government Intervention

Published on

UKHRUL: The bandh imposed on the Litan–Shangkai road has been lifted following a prolonged and constructive dialogue between the Government of Manipur, MLAs, and the concerned Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

Sources said the bandh along the NH-202 Imphal-Ukhrul road was lifted after Naga MLAs called on the Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand, on Friday night to apprise the continued blockade of NH 202 at Shangkai and Mongkot Chepu and the proposed protest rally of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) on March 21 at Litan. During the meeting, the chief minister assured that the blockade will be lifted by March 20 night.

It may be mentioned that, the TKS, condemning the blockade of NH-202, as a “direct challenge to the entire community” had on March 18 issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government to immediately provide a clear, credible assurance of public safety for all travelers along the highway.

Blockade of NH202, the only lifeline in the area, has severely affected daily commuters, students, patients, and traders who rely on it for essential needs.

TKS, the Tangkhul apex student body, had urged all civil groups, community leaders, and the general public to join in solidarity for a mass democratic procession scheduled for Saturday, March 21 in Litan.

Meanwhile, Ukhrul A/C MLA Ram Muivah urged the concerned authorities and the district administration to intensify efforts toward the restoration of lasting peace and tranquility in the Litan area. The MLA also appealed that special attention be directed towards ensuring the security and uninterrupted accessibility of NH-202.
