Bharat Raksha Manch insists on registering FIRs against Hajela

Guwahati: A national body, dedicated to making India an illegal migrant-free nation, urges Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to approve all FIRs to be registered against the scam-stars of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process in the state. Bharat Raksha Manch (BRM) also appealed to the state government to file an affidavit before the Supreme Court seeking the complete re-verification of the NRC draft.

BRM, in a memorandum to Sarma, pointed out that at least five FIRs were lodged against the former NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela, who has seemingly gone with an early retirement, but none has been entertained by Assam police to date. It also demanded that criminal proceedings should be initiated against the then commissioner of the State Home & Political department for his alleged corruption during the NRC updation process, as was recommended by the comptroller and auditor general of India.

The influential forum organised protest demonstrations on 2 October in various parts of India including Guwahati, Agartala, Kolkata, Patna, Jamshedpur, Bhopal, Mumbai, Nagpur, Nashik, Dehradun, Jammu, etc for a nationwide NRC and also due punishments to the individuals including Hajela, who were involved with the Assam NRC updation scam to the tune of Rs 260 crore and also inclusion of millions of illegal Bangladeshi citizens’ names in the draft.

“Currently Hajela is facing police complaints by his immediate successor Hitesh Devsarma (before CID and vigilance & anti-corruption, Assam), Aabhijit Sharma (Paltan Bazar police station), Luit Kumar Barman (Paltan Bazar PS) and Gitika Bhattacharya (Dispur PS). We don’t see any reason for not registering these complaints,” said Dwijendra N Borthakur, BRM’s Assam unit president, adding that they had already sent memorandums to union home minister Amit Shah and Assam governor GC Kataria with the same demands.
