Ukhrul, July 19: In an exciting leap for biodiversity conservation, a rare flying squirrel, believed to be of significant scientific importance and characterized by its prominent elongated white tufted ears, has been documented in the forests of Shirui village, Ukhrul district. This landmark discovery is the result of a grassroots initiative led by the local non-profit ENFOGAL (Environmental Force at Grass Root Level) in collaboration with Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh.

The core team behind this discovery includes Patrick Shangh (Project Director, ENFOGAL), Chingrisoror Rumthao (Field Officer, WTI), wildlife photographers Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh, and local guide Pamreithing Luireiwo. Their combined expertise, dedication, and passion for wildlife made this achievement possible.

The discovery was made possible by the active involvement of Shirui villagers, who had earlier taken the bold and visionary step of banning hunting. This collective action has created a safer environment for wildlife to thrive. “This is a moment of pride and proof that when communities take charge of conservation, nature responds,” said Patrick Shangh, Project Director of ENFOGAL.

Wildlife photographers Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh, both from Ukhrul district, played a vital role in documenting the species. Their tireless efforts and deep commitment to wildlife have helped reveal the hidden richness of Ukhrul’s forest ecosystems.

“It was surreal to witness such a rare species in our forest—almost as if nature was rewarding our patience and respect,” said Horzak Zimik.

“Capturing this moment through my lens is more than a personal achievement; it’s a reminder for all of us to protect what still remains,” added Chuimaran Shangh.

Local guide Pamreithing Luireiwo of Shirui village, known for his traditional ecological knowledge and understanding of wildlife behavior, also played a key role in locating and identifying the species within its natural habitat.

With the formal approval of the Shirui village authority, the team from ENFOGAL along with Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh will now undertake a detailed study on the flying squirrel’s habitat, diet, and behavior. The findings will be shared with experts and institutions for further study and possible scientific classification.

Shirui village remains strongly committed to conserving its rich biodiversity, and this discovery underscores the power of community-led conservation. ENFOGAL continues to lead environmental action across the region, empowering youth, raising awareness, and promoting local stewardship of nature. It remains the only NGO in the area dedicated solely to wildlife conservation.
