Businessman sets precedent by paying advanced property tax in Manipur

Imphal: In a first for Manipur, businessman Takhelambam Chandan, hailing from Chingmeirong West, Imphal East District, has made an advanced deposit for property tax under the Manipur Municipalities (Property Tax) Rules 2019.

Chandan’s proactive approach has drawn praise from the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), with officials commending his initiative during a visit to his residence led by IMC Commissioner Joyce Kemp on Saturday.

“Property tax applies to structures, including kutcha, semi-pucca, and pucca buildings, whether single-story or multi-story, rather than open empty land’, clarified Deputy Municipal Commissioner Thokchom Sidartha on the sidelines of the visit.

He highlighted that the tax rates vary based on the type of structure, adding that government is yet to issue any formal order for property tax collection in Manipur, but it is anticipated in the near future. Sidartha further explained that areas categorised as Category A, such as Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar under the IMC, will incur the highest property tax rates, while rates will be lower in the outskirts.

He assured that funds collected from property tax would be allocated towards urban amenity projects and appealed for public cooperation in this endeavour.

Takhelambam Chandan, the trailblazing citizen who has made an advanced property tax payment, said people should abide by rules and regulations laid down by government to steer clear of legal repercussions.

Chandan who has made an Advanced Property Tax Deposit of 8 Thousand 186 rupees, said he paid his Property Tax as a law abiding citizen. He was given a discount of 20 per cent for making the payment in advance. It is worth noting that property tax payments are typically made on an annual basis.
