Candlelight Vigil Held in Churachandpur

CHURACHANDPUR: A candlelight vigil was on Wednesday held at Churachandpur District Hospital campus by the Zomi Students Federation GHQ in honour of (L) Vungzagin Valte, MLA of 58th Thanlon AC who died on February 21 at a Delhi hospital. Valte was undergoing treatment since he was brutally attacked during the outbreak of the Manipur violence. On May 4, 2023, the MLA and his driver were brutally attacked, leading to the death of his driver while the MLA was airlifted to Delhi for medical treatment.

The coffin of the Zomi leader and sitting MLA of Thanlon AC, which reached Lamka town by 12 noon via Mizoram, was toured in his constituency.

During the candlelight vigil, Gousuan Valte, son of the late MLA said that his father was always concerned about the welfare of students, including ZSF, KSO and HSA, MSU, etc and was committed to the demand for a separate administration.

“Even after he was airlifted to Delhi, after the attack, he always was concerned about the victims of the Manipur conflict despite fighting for his life. He was constantly in ICU due to the severity of his injury… In spite of his deteriorating health, my father wanted to meet the Prime Minister on September 13 regarding the demand for a separate administration for the Kuki, Zomi, Hmar – Mizo from Manipur. He had wished for a separate administration in the form of a Union Territory with a legislature for which he had fought all his life,” Gousuan Valte said.

Meanwhile, all tribal groups in Churachandpur district came together to further the wish of the late leader. KSO Churachandpur president and HSA Churachandpur president expressed their solidarity with the late MLA and said that they will always stand for the wishes of the late leader and always support all efforts by the Zomi Students Federation, amid the people chanting “We want  Justice “.

The ZSF GHQ president said that the death of the “Hero” will be made to further his vision and that they will fight  till the end to make his vision of separation from Manipur a success.
