Center’s Representative AK Mishra Meets Top NSCN-IM Leaders, Fresh Round of Talks Scheduled for Next Month

Ukhrul: AK Mishra, the Central government’s representative for the Indo-Naga peace talks, held an informal closed-door meeting with the top leadership of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) in Dimapur on September 17, according to official sources.

As reported, AK Mishra, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), met with the NSCN-IM’s collective leadership, including veteran leader and Ato Kilonser (Secretary General) Th Muivah, at Camp Hebron in Dimapur. The meeting was also attended by Chairman Q. Tuccu, Vice-Chairman Tongmeth Wangnao, Deputy Ato Kilonser Lieutenant General (Retd) VS Atem, and NSCN-IM Army Chief Anthony Shimray.

The closed-door discussions, which lasted over two hours, led to a decision to resume the Naga peace talks in New Delhi during the first week of October. This was confirmed by sources close to the development.

This marks the first official resumption of talks since the last formal meeting held in December, though sources indicated that informal discussions have continued over the months.

Although the meeting was described as fruitful, the specific details of the discussions remain confidential.

The Naga political talks have been ongoing for over 25 years, with the Central government engaging with the NSCN-IM and NNPGs separately since 1997 and 2017, respectively. Mishra, a former special director of the Intelligence Bureau, was appointed in 2022 as the government’s representative for the talks.

The NSCN-IM continues to demand a separate flag and constitution for Nagas, which remains a major sticking point in the peace process.
